Not every backstage pass tells the whole story. Some barely scratch the surface.

From the personal collection of Showco alum Doc Gans comes this extraordinary late-70s MUSE / Madison Square Garden crew relic set — a rare, intact grouping of artifacts from one of the most storied benefit concerts in rock history.

Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) brought together some of the biggest names in music for a landmark run at Madison Square Garden in September 1979. Doc was there — not as a fan, but as crew — working the event from the inside out.

The production crew had nowhere to decompress between rehearsals and show days. Eventually, someone carved out an unused room hidden within the bowels of MSG that quickly became the unofficial crew hang, later nicknamed "the blow room" by those who passed through it. Crew, artists, road managers, and industry personalities all drifted through the space during the run.

It was also during this event that Doc found himself deep in conversation backstage with a stranger for nearly an hour — only realizing afterward that the man was none other than David Bowie.

These pieces weren’t merchandise. They were never sold to the public. They are artifacts of a very specific backstage world — one that existed somewhere between exhaustion, creativity, chaos, and live rock history.

This package includes 6 items from Doc Gans’ personal collection:

  • Original handmade MUSE / MSG 'Surf Nazi' backstage laminate
  • “Surf Nazi” crew tee — produced exclusively for the MUSE backstage crew. A note on the name: "Surf Nazi" is a term rooted in total dedication and devotion to surfing and Mother Ocean — nothing more. It has no association with Nazis, skinheads, racism, or any of that. It is a culture shared with skaters and snowboarders, artforms that evolved from their patriarch, surfing. The crew adopted it as a badge of that allegiance.
  • MUSE MSG (9/19–23/1979) Vintage T-Shirt
  • Original MUSE Tour Itinerary
  • MUSE Access All Areas Badge — Musicians United for Safe Energy
  • MUSE Tour Catalog / Concert Program

Now preserved within the Showco Archives collection.
